Coming from a professional life in Pakistan, Sawera arrived at Royal Holloway looking for a masters degree that would build on her experience.
International student Sawera Nazir left her career in programming and development in Pakistan to continue her education in the UK. She chose to study a postgraduate degree in International Public Policy and Development at Royal Holloway to strengthen her theoretical knowledge and build on the practical experience she had gained in her professional field.
I had been working for several years but felt I didn’t have theory to back up what I was already doing in my professional life. This course blends both theoretical and methodological elements in its modules and provides the analytical tools I need for the UK job market.
Why the UK and why Royal Holloway?
Sawera chose the UK for its high standard of education and because studying in an English-speaking country would make it easier for her to integrate.
Leaving full-time work to return to education was a difficult choice. I chose Royal Holloway because it offers the perfect balance for this stage in my life – great academic grounding along with structure.
Career support was an important factor. She wanted a university that offered career progression opportunities, and Royal Holloway delivered. She has attended several on-campus job fairs and used the Careers Service for CV mentorship and support.
Her first impression of the stunning campus was how grand and welcoming it is. “I live on campus and I love how green, calm and student-focused it is.”
The international student experience
After receiving her offer, Sawera joined the New to the UK programme, which she describes as “the best thing I could have done”.
She received free airport pick-up on arrival and met other international students early on. Sessions on practical topics, from opening a bank account to registering with a doctor, helped her feel welcomed, supported and gave her the chance to make new friends from the offset.
I had quite a lot of anxiety about leaving my professional life to study in a different country. I had forgotten what it felt like to be a student again. Royal Holloway really has made the transition so easy.
Favourite part of the course so far...
One of Sawera’s favourite modules has been Political Economy of Development, where she explored development theories from economic, political and social perspectives, and how they shape policymaking at government and transnational levels. “The lecturers are very approachable and friendly,” she says, “And they are genuinely invested in our growth.”
The classes are interactive and discussion-oriented. Lecturers encourage curiosity and value your input. Students come from so many different countries and backgrounds, which makes for rich discussions. Coming from an international professional background I feel like I bring a lot to the table too.
My Royal Holloway experience . . .“My experience at Royal Holloway has been transformative, empowering and truly welcoming.” |
Advice future students
Sawera’s advice is: “Don’t underestimate the power of your own experiences. Whether you’re coming from education or stepping away from your professional life, this course values diversity and curiosity.”
She also recommends joining societies. She is part of the Cinema Society and the Foodie Society. “They are great fun and have really helped me make friends and unwind.”
I really do feel part of the Royal Holloway community. I've met students from across the world and the inclusivity and diversity on campus has really helped me fit in.
