The interview archive
The OHEM project created a unique archive of 100 ‘life story’ interviews with UK environmental campaigners working in many fields, from conservation and transport to energy and climate change. This archive, containing in total over six million words in audio and transcribed form, is available for study in the sound archive at the British Library. The archive gives voice to generations of environmental campaigners whose efforts have made a difference, whether through the initiation of projects, the development of policy or the mobilisation of protest.
Such a large archive has many potential uses, within education and research in schools and universities, and also within the UK environmental sector itself. In order to make the resource even more available, we have created hundreds of audio clips and made them freely available, alongside verbatim transcripts. The book of the project, Voices for Change, draws extensively on these interviews. We hope its direct links to the voices of our interviewees will make the experience of reading a more enjoyable and rewarding one.
Biographies of 101 environmentalists
For this project, we undertook 100 life history interviews with 101 people (including two sisters) active in all parts of the environmental movement across the four nations of the UK over the last 50 years. The ‘life story’ format of the interviews and the process of selection from a much longer list, including nominations from many sources, is explained in the Introduction to the project book Voices for Change
