Students must pass both of these elements in order to pass the course as a whole.
Formative Assessment: correction and/or marking of written work and oral presentations set throughout the year.
IT3009 is a core language course for all Year 4 students. It comprises a written and an oral component. In this
course there is a close correlation between the material selected for use in the written and the oral classes. There are three hours of seminars per week (Written, Oral and Practice) as well as a grammar lecture taught fortnightly.
In the written class, students will have the opportunity to practice translating from Italian into English and from English into Italian a variety of passages selected as examples of different types of writing, including journalism, fiction, criticism and history, whilst learning about theoretical notions on translation. Students will also have the opportunity to analyse articles concerning contemporary Italian culture and society. They will refine their abilities to structure cohesive and informed written commentaries on set Italian texts as well as perfect their reading comprehension and paraphrasing skills.
In the Oral and in the Practice class students will perfect their ability to analyse, summarise and comment on a range of complex passages, which are selected from newspapers and on podcasts selected from internet sources. Students will develop further their ability to prepare and deliver short oral presentations on topics set by the course tutor as well as debate issues related to Italian current affairs.
In the Grammar Lectures, students revise complex morpho-syntactic features and refine their use in context. They complete a series of grammar exercises specifically devised for final year students.
All texts and grammar exercises are available on Moodle. Students are required to download, print out and read them in preparation for all the language classes. Supplementary material will be provided by the teacher when necessary.
