Course objectives
By the end of the programme you will:
- Have focused on the principles of professional writing using plain English
- Explain the four-step approach to writing letters, emails and short reports at work
- Practise writing with a clear purpose and tailored for the reader with appropriate tone and language
- Demonstrate a simple structure to produce a written document
- Be able to distinguish between the different styles needed for letters, emails and short reports
- Learn some key grammar techniques to aid clarity and brevity of the content
- Understand the importance of editing and proof-reading.

This highly participative and interactive workshop will give you practical tools and techniques using the latest up-to-date writing at work research.
You will:
- Identify the four-step approach to writing
- Have a go at a diagnostic email with group members
- Plan the three-part structure according to the key objectives
- Work on outlining, mind mapping and the statement and question model
- Distinguish between emails and letters
- Learn about appropriate tone and style for your documents
- Practise some key grammar points
- Learn how not to let yourself down by successful editing and proof-reading.
