Description

What is it?

This session will give you everything you need to generate real-world impacts from your research. You will leave with practical tools you can use immediately in your research, whatever your discipline and career stage. The training is based on the latest research evidence and takes a unique relational approach to deliver wide-reaching and lasting impacts.

The session is lead by Prof Mark Reed, a recognized international expert in impact research with over 100 publications. He has won awards for the impact of his work as the HEFCE N8 Chair of Socio-Technical Innovation at Newcastle University and Research Manager for an international charity.

We will also hear from:

  • Professor Simon Blackburn, Mathematics and Information Security Group at Royal Holloway. Prof Blackburn will share his experience of being a REF lead with two 4* case studies and serving as an assessor on the REF 2014 Mathematics panel.
  • Professor Laura J. Spence, Director of Research Impact for School of Management at Royal Holloway. Prof Spence will be reflecting on her work with small businesses and professional organisations nationally and internationally and her 2014 REF case study.

You will receive a free copy of The Research Impact Handbook (275 pages) for future reference, and will be offered free optional follow-up support.

Target audience

Any Royal Holloway academic looking to grow the impact of their research:

  • Colleagues with experience of developing impact looking for a refresher and new tools to grow impact
  • Those leading or planning impact activities in any discipline, including potential REF 2020 case studies
  • Colleagues starting off on their impact journeys and wanting an overview of the area

Course components

  • Learn about evidence-based principles for delivering research impact that you can use at every stage of your research
  • Be inspired by case studies that will encourage you to think out of the box and approach impact in new ways
  • Be challenged to think critically about how you plan for, track and report impacts as you discuss impact case studies linked to pathways to impact
  • Discover easy and quick-to-use templates you can use immediately to:
    • Identify beneficiaries of your research, those who may be negatively affected by your work, and those who have the power to facilitate or block your impact
    • Create a powerful impact plan that will guarantee your research makes a difference

The session finishes at 2pm, and if you’d like to ask questions or find out more about a specific topic, Prof Mark Reed will be available during 2-3pm to do that.
