Meet Timothy Davies, who studied BA History.
Timothy Davies Alumni Profile
Tell us about your career path since graduation. How did you end up where you are?
I travelled for 6 months after getting my degree. After I came back, I applied to a job in IBM who were growing quickly at the time in the software business. Since then, I have always worked in IT for some of the largest software and consulting companies in the world, including IBM, Microsoft, SAP and Gartner. I never planned to be in sales and management roles but I’ve found that they suit me, are financially good and offer excellent work/home balance.
What was it about your time at Royal Holloway that has most benefitted your career or influenced your path since graduation?
I think it was a combination of mixing with people from lots of different cultural backgrounds, using the skills from the degree in articulating points of view and researching answers, as well as playing rugby for the three years, which taught me teamwork skills and how to work together for a common goal.
What would you say to potential students considering studying at Royal Holloway? / What advice would you give to students thinking about a career in your sector?
Both my brother and sister also studied at Royal Holloway. For me it was a perfect size - not too big that it was daunting or made you feel lost. I loved the campus environment where everything was close by, and, of course, the amazing Founders Building. Being near incredible places like Windsor Great Park, and with easy access to London was also a big selling point for me. For me the IT market is still very robust and offers so many opportunities for growth and development. It is moving at a very fast pace, and of course is very relevant today with the emergence of AI and business potential it offers.
What did you love most about your time at Royal Holloway? / What's your favourite memory of Royal Holloway?
It would have to be a mix of the yearly Summer Ball, as well as my time playing rugby for the 1st and 2nd teams. I met friends for life, who I still stay in touch with.
