Meet Owen, who studied BSc Business and Management
What is it like to study your course?
There’s a wide variety of modules that touch on all aspects of business, from financial to marketing, down to understanding the reasons behind consumption and understanding consumers. These gave me the opportunity to focus on what I enjoyed the most in the business sphere and ultimately led me towards pursuing a career in consulting.
What was the most interesting thing you studied at Royal Holloway?
The most interesting modules were the third-year options on consulting and corporate governance. Consulting gave me lots of practical opportunities to apply the teaching and theory, while the Corporate Governance module helped broaden my perspective on the business world. The many case studies and readings really helped me engage in the learning process.
How did you find the staff and the teaching on your course?
The lectures and seminars are very insightful and the staff in the Business School are always happy to help afterwards. They provide lots of useful information and I have personally found the further readings useful to expand my knowledge in the areas I find most interesting.
Why did you choose to study Business and Management at Royal Holloway?
I chose to study Business and Management at Royal Holloway because of the variety of modules I could choose throughout the course. The ability to tailor the degree to what I wanted to study was very appealing.
What else do you like to do at Royal Holloway outside of studying?
I enjoyed playing in the campus social league for my team Carl FC, we have played every week since my first year and it has made something for myself and friends to look forward to every week.
What was your journey to Royal Holloway like?
My ambition growing up was always to move from Lancashire to London, with my degree being the facilitator to do so. My journey to Royal Holloway was a bit convoluted as I had a few delays before starting university, including taking an unexpected gap year. But these setbacks gave me more time to decide on the type of university I aspired to join and Royal Holloway appeared as a great option.
As a home student, the application process was very simple with the university keeping me updated every step of the way throughout my application.
How has Royal Holloway helped prepare you for your future and what are you hoping to go on and do?
My time at Royal Holloway has helped my knowledge of a wide array of business areas that I plan to take forward into my career. Now I’m graduating, I plan to put all my effort into my career at IBM Consulting to provide innovative and creative solutions to client problems, simultaneously focusing on a sustainable work-life balance.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d pass on to a current or future student?
I wish I had immersed myself in my studies earlier in my degree. My advice for anyone joining is to have fun throughout your first year but make your degree your sole focus in the latter two years, as the skills and knowledge provided in your modules can be key for internship and grad scheme applications.
