Members of the local community can continue to visit a free public exhibition, Ocean Plastics: Research and Action, which gives visitors the chance to discover how plastic pollution begins long before it reaches our oceans.

Oceanplastics

Launched in June in partnership with SC Johnson, the exhibition uses interactive displays and real-world examples to explore how everyday plastic waste reaches the world's oceans. It also explains how plastics break down into microplastics and nanoplastics, as well as the practical steps which can help reduce pollution.

The exhibition also showcases research from Royal Holloway academics, including studies into how different plastics degrade over time and how researchers are investigating microplastics in local rivers connected to our wider water systems.

Designed for visitors of all ages, the exhibition translates the latest research into an accessible experience suitable for families and other members of the local community.

Dr Nathalie Grassineau, from the University’s Department of Earth Sciences, said when the exhibition opened: "Ocean plastic pollution is a global challenge, but it is also something we can study, understand and act on.

"Through Ocean Plastics: Research and Action, we want to bring research into a public space and help visitors see how plastics move through everyday life, rivers and oceans.

“By making the science accessible, we hope the exhibition supports better understanding and encourages students, schools and the wider public to think about the role they can play in reducing plastic waste."

The exhibition is free to visit and is hosted in the Exhibition Space in the Emily Wilding Davison Building on Royal Holloway's Egham campus. Residents, families and visitors are encouraged to take the opportunity to explore the exhibition before it closes and discover how research at the University is helping to tackle one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
