The course

Law with Business (LLB)

The qualifying LLB Law with Business degree is a blend of legal study and business insight, preparing you for the complex commercial environments modern legal practices operate in. Your degree is 75% legal studies taught by our Law School, combined with 25% business studies taught by our Business School. All modules will be taught in our campus in Egham. Get career ready with this degree, which will set you up for a range of roles in law, business and civil society.

You’ll study foundations of UK law such as public, criminal, contract, tort, and EU law. You’ll then explore business topics like accounting, marketing, entrepreneurship, international business and sustainable development, ensuring that you graduate with knowledge of legal matters and commercial fluency.

Core Modules

Year 1
  • This module will describe the key principles of academic integrity, focusing on university assignments. Plagiarism, collusion and commissioning will be described as activities that undermine academic integrity, and the possible consequences of engaging in such activities will be described. Activities, with feedback, will provide you with opportunities to reflect and develop your understanding of academic integrity principles.

     

  • Constitutions establish and control the powers of the state and regulate the relationship between the state and its citizens. This module examines the UK’s uncodified constitution, primarily considering the main characteristics of the British system of government, including the division of powers between the legislature, executive, and judiciary and between Westminster and the devolved regions; key constitutional concepts and their associated challenges, including Parliamentary sovereignty, conventions, the rule of law, and human rights protection before and after the Human Rights Act 1998; and how administrative law, particularly judicial review, controls the actions of the government and public authorities.

  • Contracts form the legal basis of commercial transactions. This module examines the legalities regarding the formation of contracts, the capacity to contract and the performance of legal obligations as well as remedies for breach of contract. In particular, you will examine the following areas: introduction to contract; invitation to treat; offer and acceptance; consideration; Promissory Estoppel; intentions to create legal relations; implied terms; express terms; exemption clauses; unfair contract terms; mistakes; types of misrepresentation; misrepresentation and remedies; duress; undue influence; frustration and force majeure; breach of contract and remedies; and third-party rights.

  • This module serves as an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of the legal system and legal study. It explores elements of the historical, philosophical and social context of the English Legal Systems, including issues of law, morality and justice. Additionally, various sources of law, including at national and international level, and through treaties, statute and case law will also be studied.

  • This module focuses on employability by involving students in practical skills sessions such as mooting, client interviewing, and negotiation. It is designed to develop core professional competencies that are required by the legal and non-legal professions.

  • In this module you'll be introduced to the fundamental aspects of financial accounting, management accounting and finance. You'll further be introduced to the underlying framework and concepts of accounting and finance and their role in organisations and society.

  • In this module, you will develop a solid grounding in key concepts relevant to a critical understanding of how organisations function, and why this matters to both employees and prospective managers. Themes such as organisational design, the social and psychological contract, conflict, power, diversity and equality, emotional labour, space and place, and the impact of internal and external forces on organisations, will be looked at through the lens of competing organisational theories such as the classical perspective, Institutional Theory, Systems Theory, and Contingency Theory. You will learn to demonstrate their understanding of, use, discuss, and evaluate these theories making use of a range of tools such as, contemporary case studies, class discussion, class presentations, and simulation exercises.

Year 2
  • This module examines the various types of interests which can exist in land, including the rights and duties under these interests, how they can be protected against third parties acquiring other interests in the land, and how they can be transferred. In particular, you will examine fundamental concepts; contracts relating to land; adverse possession; leases and licences; mortgages; co-ownership and the family home; freehold covenants; easements; and protection of interests in land (both registered and unregistered).

  • This module provides you with an introduction to the law of tort, focusing on general principles of tort liability in the law governing reputation and misuse of private information, negligence, intentional interference with the person and the law of nuisance. Specifically, you will develop an understanding in the following areas: the function and purpose of the law of tort; an introduction to the law of negligence and its importance in the law of tort; an examination of the duty of care and its breach including how is it manifests in specific torts such as employers liability, vicarious liability, occupiers liability, economic loss and psychiatric injury; an examination of the remaining aspects of negligence such as causation and remoteness; general defences; defamation and misuse of private information; trespass to the person including harassment; and finally, interference with property rights and enjoyment in the form of nuisance and the rule in Rylands v Fletcher.

  • In this module you will develop an understanding of the general nature of criminal law and learn how to apply the general principles of criminal liability, including the liability of accomplices. You will look at the elements of an offence and the various requirements for actus reus and mens rea, considering how they apply to various offences against the person or property. You will examine selected principal offences against the person, including fatal and non-fatal offences involving physical violence such as assaults and those involving sexual violence. You will also asses selected principal property offences, including theft, burglary, robbery and deception, and the inchoate offences and the liability of accomplices.

  • In this module you will develop an understanding of what is meant by globalisation, looking at the growth and development of the international economy from the late nineteenth-century to the present day. You will consider the many arguments and myths surrounding globalisation, focussing on the growth and development of the global economy during the twentieth century. You will examine institutions such as the World Trade Organisation and multinational enterprises, and the role of foreign direct investment as a driving force in the integration of developing countries into the globalisation process. You will also consider the consequences of globalisation in relation to the environment, social inequalities, and poverty.

Year 3
  • In this module you will examine equity and its relationship with the common law. You will explore the concept of a trust and the laws associated with governing the creation and administration of trusts. You will explore the development of equity historically and explain how purpose trusts operate. You will look at how charitable trusts are created and consider the duties of trustees. You will consider the nature and scope of fiduciary obligations and consider when those obligations might be breached and the consequences of such. You will also consider particular types of trusts, including secret trusts, resulting and constructive trusts.

  • This module examines the role of the European Union (EU) in the free movement of peoples, goods, services and capital. You will explore the legal enforcement of treaties on which the Union is based, with a consideration of both national and international systems. You will examine these treaties and the various EU institutions created under them (and incorporated into domestic law), examining their legal and policy-making powers. In particular, you will look at the laws and functions of the EU Institutions including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Council and the Court of Justice of the EU, and explore how free movement works across national borders and how the law of the EU is enforced.

  • In this module, you'll learn the knowledge and skills needed to be effective in a professional practice environment. You'll focus on communication and the need to adopt different leadership styles in dynamic business contexts. The module focuses on careers in accountancy, but the skills developed are transferable and will be useful in any work environment.

Year 2
  • In this module, you will gain a good understanding of the main theories of strategic management and how to apply them in the context of contemporary business environment. You will be introduced to key concepts and debates about corporate and business strategy. The changing context in which the corporate strategy is formulated and implemented will be examined. The module also demonstrates how theoretical debates can be related to corporate strategies via the analysis of case studies covering a variety of industrial settings and situations.

  • In this module you will develop an understanding of the development and contemporary fluctuations of a key player on the international economic stage, the multinational enterprise (MNEs). You will look at a variety of concepts and frameworks, and with particular reference to the political economy context within which they operate. You will focus on the development and organisation of MNEs, their impacts on host and home countries, MNEs’ role as political actors, and the long-term capability building of MNEs.

  • In this you will develop an understanding of how digital technologies are being used in marketing programmes. You will look the frameworks and models that are relevant to digital marketing practice and their supporting technologies. You will examine various digital channels and how they are used within marketing campaigns, considering search engine optimisation strategies, customer acquisition and retention, customer service, direct marketing, communications, e-tailing and digital channel structures.

  • This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between digital innovation and circular economy principles. You will explore how digital technologies can be leveraged to create sustainable and circular business models, emphasising the role of innovation in addressing environmental challenges. You will critically evaluate the economics and environmental benefits of adopting circular business models and exame how various forms of digital technologies can support circular economy initiatives.

Year 3
  • This module explores corporate insolvency and personal bankruptcy law in England and Wales, an increasingly important area of practice shaped by developments in finance, technology, and global policy. It develops both practical skills and critical understanding sought by employers across legal and financial sectors.

    The module introduces the principles, objectives, and regulation of insolvency law before examining core procedures, including liquidation and bankruptcy. It also covers the pari passu principle and its exceptions, powers to address misconduct, and the treatment of specific debts such as student and consumer liabilities.

  • This module explores the choices parties face in resolving disputes, focusing on alternative dispute resolution (ADR), particularly negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Term One covers negotiation and mediation, examining their operation, regulation, and the theory behind effective communication and dispute resolution techniques. Term Two shifts to arbitration, exploring its role in international and non-commercial disputes, including procedural and substantive aspects under English and comparative law. The module combines theory with practical exercises, such as role-play scenarios, to build professional skills in teamwork, negotiation, and strategy, preparing students for both domestic and international legal practice.

  • This module provides a comparative overview of major competition law systems, examining how different jurisdictions regulate large corporate power. It introduces key UK legislation (Competition Act 1998, Enterprise Act 2002, and Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024) alongside the approaches of the EU, USA, China, and newer regimes, with no prior knowledge required.

    Focusing on digital markets, the module explores how law and policy respond to technological change, drawing on economic insights where helpful. It develops transferable skills while introducing an area of growing legal and professional importance.

  • This module introduces students to the intersection of law, technology, and society, focusing on how emerging technologies reshape legal reasoning, regulation, and professional practice. It explores foundational theories of artificial intelligence, the development of legal technologies, and the ethical and governance challenges raised by digital transformation. By combining doctrinal, regulatory, and socio-technical perspectives, the module equips students with critical insight into how law both shapes and is reshaped by technological innovation. Through lectures, workshops and practice-based seminars, students will engage critically with case law, policy frameworks, scholarly debates as well as legal tech solutions.

  • The module considers the complex relationship between law and sport, examining how legal principles regulate sport in both domestic, European and international contexts. In particular, the module explores the governance of sport, the resolution of disputes in sports, particularly through the use of arbitration procedures, and the role of contract law in underpinning the structure of global sport. In terms of substantive sports law, the module will consider challenges to sporting integrity, including anti-doping and match-fixing, eligibility rules, the organisation of competitions (including ‘breakaway leagues’, the role of agents, transfer regulations, financial regulations and broadcasting rights.

  • This module provides students with a valuable opportunity to undertake a micro professional placement in an organisation aligned with their interests and career goals. Students apply management theory in practice and gain insights into real-world operations, team dynamics, and professional culture. The module develops workplace readiness, enhances employability, and strengthens reflective capacity. Through structured assessment, students consolidate learning across their degree and prepare for transition into graduate employment or entrepreneurial ventures.

  • In this module you will develop an understanding of business innovation in the context of new ventures and corporations. You will look at how changes in technology, markets, and society are affecting how new business models, products and services emerge. You will consider innovation as a source of competitive advantage and examine the management of innovation, critically evaluating associated risks and uncertainty. You will also analyse past experiences and how they can be used to exploit future opportunities through innovation.

  • In this module you will develop an understanding of contemporary issues in the theory and practice of accounting for sustainability. You will look at key issues in the growing ara of sustainability accounting including notions of accountability in the context of sustainability, cultural and religious perspectives on sustainability accounting, elements of sustainability reporting, and the role of accounting in embedding sustainability in decision making.

  • This module aims to provide a comprehensive overview to important and current leadership theories. Working at the boundary of practice and theory, weekly sessions are highly interactive and will be delivered in the form of lectures and workshops. We expect each student to engage proactively with all aspects of the module, including adequate preparation for each session as well as post-class reflections.

     

Teaching and learning will be through a mix of formal lectures, seminar discussions and verbal presentations as well as guided independent research, guided independent study, coursework essays, and a dissertation. A variety of assessments are used and include verbal presentations and essays after which you’ll be provided with detailed comments. The combination of quality and range of assessments helps you to develop a wide range of skills and learning.

Having studied this course you’ll become 'enterprise ready' - combining legal knowledge with business understanding to strengthen career readiness across legal, corporate, and regulatory pathways.

Employability is enhanced with experience in the legal advice clinic, mentoring schemes, and specialised practice opportunities and specific module content designed to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). The core components of the LLB meet the criteria for the academic stage of training for those going on to do the Bar Vocational Course for qualification as a barrister.
