The Contract Ed Talk network proposed a special issue in The Law Teacher on the topic of “New Trends in Teaching Contract Law” answering to an open call by the journal. The network also proposed an in-person workshop in the autumn of 2024 to provide a forum for a wide range of contributions, provide valuable feedback for authors, and to select the best ones to be published in the summer of 2025.

The idea of the special issue was conceived by the proposed guest editors Marton Ribary (RHUL) and Fred Motson (Open University) together with founders of the Contract Ed Talk network Jo Wilson and Jeanette Ashton (both Sussex), and Antony Starza-Allen (Surrey), Aris Christidis (Newcastle) and Asta Zokaityte (Kent). They are all members of Contract Ed Talk, a national pedagogic network, with 30 members from across the UK who teach contract law, and who are interested in sharing best practice and exploring different pedagogical approaches. The network was launched in 2022 to bridge the gap between substantive contract law, and legal education.

The aim of the proposed special issue is to highlight and explore issues and topics that have arisen during our Network events which we feel will be of interest and importance to the wider teaching community. We are particularly keen to demonstrate that innovative approaches to teaching are possible, even in core modules with large student numbers. Contract underpins several areas of commercial practice and engaging students from the outset is essential.

This special issue will contribute to a range of broader academic discussions on topics such as active learning, authentic assessment, and visualisation techniques, framing those discussions in the context of contract law across different jurisdictions and teaching traditions, and the challenges of large group teaching specifically.
