Hi, I am Nodebem (Noddy), a BSc Social Science graduate, Class of 2025. Studying Social Science was one of the best choices I ever made. It allowed me to learn in-depth about key, current societal topics and adopt many diverse perspectives. This enriched my knowledge of society and how it holistically functions.

Some of my favourite modules across the course were:
Madness and Society, Critical Perspectives on Children, Families and Communities, Sociology of Health and Illness and the Dissertation Module. It was fun to uncover curiosities and interests in topics I did not know I even had!
My third year dissertation researched ‘What is the relevance of representation in children's media for people of colour?’ A subject matter I felt and still feel deeply about. Securing a 1st Class Distinction was even more special. The dissertation was a great way to express my interest in a topic of my choice, whilst presenting it in an academic format.
In second year, I did a paid Summer Internship with Doctors of the World, a fantastic experience organised via the University. This humanitarian organisation works to reduce inequalities and hardships faced by marginalised and vulnerable groups. I learned to advocate, conducted clinic appointments, took advice line calls, completed casework and followed up with GPs and dentists. I advocated for pre-natal and post-natal appointments for marginalised women and offered sexual health advice and testing. Signposting people to relevant charities and organisations based on their needs and situations involved knowing about legal aid, housing advice and healthcare services. This experience increased my confidence in a professional setting and developed my interpersonal and communication skills. I walked away with experience in a dynamic and multifunctional environment.
Although interested in healthcare and improving outcomes for people, I did not always know what that looked like in terms of my future career path. This experience and studying the Sociology of Health and Illness and Ageing and an Ageing Society modules exposed me to knowledge of societal, political and economic frameworks which impact society and people’s experiences. I began to research the biotech and pharmaceutical impact on the public. Now I am excited to start an MSc in Medical Affairs in September!
