Dr Eugenio Vaccari (Lecturer in Law, Department of Law and Criminology) has been nominated "Silver Medal Winner" in the 2022 Competition in International Insolvency Studies. The Competition is organised by the International Insolvency Institute (III). The International Insolvency Institute is an invitation-only, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and promoting insolvency as a respected discipline in the international field.

The III Prize is awarded for original legal research, commentary or analysis on topics of international insolvency and restructuring significance and on comparative international analysis of domestic insolvency and restructuring issues and developments. The Prize Competition is open to full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students and to practitioners in practice for five years or less. The list of previous winners - which include leading practitioners and academics in the field - is available here.

The paper submitted by Dr Vaccari is titled: "A Modular Approach to Restructuring and Insolvency Law: Executory Contracts and Onerous Property in England and Italy". The paper seeks to determine the extent to which the reformed English and Italian insolvency laws pursue a modular and proceduralist approach to corporate restructuring and liquidation by offering a range of efficient and cost-effective solutions to financial distress that is capable of maximising the value of the debtor’s estate whilst protecting vulnerable players and firm-specific investors. The research for this paper was possible thanks to a generous grant provided by the Università degli Studi Milano Bicocca, which allowed Dr Vaccari to conduct independent research on these topics during his fellowship in Milan in April-May 2022.

The paper will be published in the Norton Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice (West) and will be included in the Westlaw electronic database. Dr Vaccari has been invited to take part to the 22nd III Annual Conference (5-8 September in Toronto, Canada), where he will be presenting his paper in front of a distinguished audience of international insolvency academics and professionals. Dr Vaccari has also been nominated to Class XI of the III NextGen Leadership Program.

Dr Eugenio Vaccari is extremely grateful to Assoc Prof Piergiuseppe Spolaore, Prof Alberto Villa, Prof Danilo Semeghini (Università degli Studi Milano Bicocca), and Dr Paul J Omar (De Montfort University, INSOL Europe) for their insightful comments on earlier drafts of this article, as well as to Robert Jago (Head of Department of Law and Criminology) and Prof Jill Marshall for supporting him in undertaking this research, and for facilitating his attendance to the fellowship programme organised by the Università degli Studi Milano Bicocca.
