Mr Tumber (MBE) has built a career spanning more than a decade in cyber security. He has led security initiatives across major organisations including Sky, EY-Parthenon, BAE Systems Digital Intelligence and CGI, focusing on governance, risk, and strategy in large-scale digital environments, and holds the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential.

In 2026 he was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) - the first recipient from the United Kingdom since the association was founded in 1984. Reserved for a very small proportion of the global membership, the designation recognises sustained leadership, influence and contribution to the profession. He was previously awarded an M.B.E. for services to cyber security. Alongside his industry work, Mr Tumber has contributed through industry judging (including the National Cyber Awards), mentoring, writing, and international speaking.

As Visiting Professor, he will support the Department's work in cyber security and AI education, mentoring and industry engagement. About the appointment, Mr Tumber said: "I am honoured to return to Royal Holloway in this role. The University gave me a strong academic foundation, and I look forward to supporting students and colleagues by sharing practical industry experience and helping to strengthen the connections between academic study and professional practice".
