Royal Holloway is a partner in the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium, which is the largest BBSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership in the UK. We are one of eight of London's world-class participating universities and specialist institutions, so this is a unique opportunity to pursue innovative interdisciplinary research. PhD supervision is typically collaborative with primary and secondary supervisors across participating LIDo institutions.
This generously funded scheme includes a stipend for successful applicants covered to UKRI levels, studentship fees and substantial research expenses. Successful students will have the opportunity to choose between a large number of projects across the LIDo partner institutions. They will be given the opportunity to experience research projects on two rotations of four months each, in different laboratories, before choosing the laboratory in which they will begin their programme.
Research in the Department of Psychology covers the neuroscience of sensation, perception, action and higher cognition, and the study of behaviour using psychophysical methods and mathematical modelling. We work with a range of populations including various clinical populations, and from children to the elderly. Our research is supported by excellent state-of-the-art research facilities including the Combined University Brain Imaging Centre (CUBIC) housing our 3T MRI scanner, along with a number of dedicated laboratories. These include psychophysiology labs, brain stimulation using TMS and tDCS, eye-tracking labs, EEG, a Virtual Reality suite, soundproof booths, a sleep lab, and an infant and child lab. Our Department was ranked joint 3rd among UK Psychology Departments in REF2021. The Department has a track record in launching many highly successful research careers through its postgraduate research programme. The 2019 Postgraduate Research Survey results show that our Department scored 95% for overall satisfaction, and we attribute this partly to our support processes, training opportunities and thriving research culture. Our diversity and good practices have been recognised with a Departmental Silver Athena SWAN award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Award.
Prospective students are invited to directly contact members of staff in our Department to discuss the possibility of PhD supervision. Please contact Dr. Robert Lachlan (co-PGR Lead and LIDo Management Committee) for further information about LIDo, or if you would like to be introduced to members of the academic staff.
Deadline to apply directly to LIDo: January 10th, 2024
