Musicology in the Age of Post-Truth

This event has been cancelled, in relation to university guidelines in light of an announcement by the UK government regarding its move into the ‘delay’ phase of its response to coronavirus (Covid-19).

Wolfgang Marx is Associate Professor in Musicology and a member of the UCD Humanities Institute where he leads the Research Strand "Death, Burial and the Afterlife". His main research interests are the representation of death in music, György Ligeti, post-truth and music, and the theory of musical genres. He regularly teaches modules including "Writing about Music", "Introduction to Opera" "Music History since 1750", "Formal Analysis", "Sociology of Music", and (at MMus level) the introductional "Musicology, Criticism & Culture" as well as "The Representation of Death in Music". In 2017-18 he introduced a new module "Post-Truth, Politics and Music - Facts and Emotion in a Digitised World"; the impact of post-truth on music and musical research was also the topic of an international conference hosted at UCD in September 2018. In 2012 he was awarded a 'Graduate Diploma in University Teaching & Learning' (NUI). Between 1992 and 2002 Wolfgang worked as a freelance author and product manager for several labels (Sony, Teldec, BMG, and others). In 1994 he was co-founder and between 1996 and 1998 chairman of the 'Dachverband der Studierenden der Musikwissenschaft' (German Musicological Students' Association). Between 1997 and 2002 he was co-editor of this association's "Studienführer Musikwissenschaft" which presents information on all musicological departments in Germany. Wolfgang joined the then UCD Department of Music in 2002 and served as Head of the restructured School of Music from 2005-8, 2012-13 and 2017-18. From 2002-2012 he was co-editor of the journal "Frankfurter Zeitschrift für Musikwissenschaft", from 2004-12 he was editor of the "Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland" (executive editor 2009-12). From 2011-13 he was Chairman of the UCD Academic Forum; he was elected a member of the fifth (2014-19) and sixth (2019-) UCD Governing Authorities.
