One of the goals of Thinking Deep is to think through what bringing together academic research and creative practice means for all stages of the processes of doing academic research and the process of doing creative practice. This includes remaining open and critical when we think about the kinds of outputs we are producing. It means sometimes producing formats recognisable to academia (journal articles, monographs, conference papers), or those recognisable to the art and wider creative world (exhibitions, short stories, novels, performances), and sometimes it means experimenting with new output forms that exist somewhere between the two, and sometimes just doing things because they seem interesting and fun.

Creative Outputs
Give the role of creative practice within Think Deep the team will produce a series of creative outputs, including art works, exhibitions and creative writings. A selection of these are listed below.
Parrott, F (2025) Distraction in Action is a project that explores the associative and dispersed thinking that is at play when developing an artwork. The project is co-authored with artist and researcher Moyra Derby. The website is designed by Claire Undy and features work by artists Kate Squires and Jenny Dunseath.
Parrott, F (2024) Documentation from a photoshoot showcasing key pieces of artwork made as part of Flora Parrott's practice based research project as part of Thinking Deep. The work is inspired by thinking around the subsurface and includes pieces made in conversation with Frank Pearson, Lindiwe Matshikiza and features still images of performer Tara Jermone-Barnabé. Mediums used include wood, paper, embroidered silk and ceramics.

Conferences & Events
The team have been involved in a series of events and conferences around the world. These include giving artist talks, seminars and key notes, as well as presenting papers in conference sessions. Conference foci include the disciplinary geography conferences such as the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) and the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers, as well other disciplinary conferences and thematically organised events. The team have also organised a series of conference sessions and events. A series of these are listed below.

2024
Chambliss, W (2024) exhibited a work of art-research entitled 'The Point Cloud of Unknowing' (2022-2024), produced in collaboration with his corporate partner GeoCam at the Esri User Conference in San Diego, California. The piece - a trial balloon for how to use the tools of physical geography to do something more like human geography (e.g. 'place' analysis); or even geophilosophy - was displayed in the form of a highly detailed 3D textured mesh based on data from repeated photogrammetric scans of Michael Heizer's monumental apophatic earthwork, Double Negative (1969). Parrott, F (2024) Symposium with Weathercote Cave in Chapel le Dale as its point of focus. The event explored the imaginative promise of spaces, the making and unmaking of the landscape and the potential to merge and collapse the real, imagined, remembered and interior into a single site.
2023
Association of American Geographers Conference
At the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers the team organised a series of sessions exploring themes related to the project. This included;
- Three sessions exploring ‘Practicing the Subsurface’, covering topics including subsuface sensing and politics from mining in Indonesia, to new forms of Earth Art; shamanic practices in the subsurface and the recreational practices of cavers.
- Two sessions on ‘Thinking with More-than-Human Subsurface’ that included thinking the subsurface with plants; sounding sewer systems, the myths of Deep England and cave fish.
- A panel session on ‘Surface Tensions’. This included project team members, as well as Eric Magrane from New Mexico State offering a geopoetics approach to considering surfaces; and Beverly Fok from University of Ilinois Urbana-Champaign, working on the maritime state in South East Asia.
The team also presented their research in other sessions, including discussions of topologies and the subsurface; Anthropocene Sediments, and toxic grounds.
