The Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) is an independent body which aims to ensure higher education students are always treated fairly. It works towards this by resolving individual complaints from students, sharing learning from complaints to help improve policies and practices, and working with other organisations in the higher education sector and beyond, and drawing on experience from university leaders is a key part of how it can achieve its aims.

Stephen brings more than 25 years of experience across a number of university settings to the Board, as well as having served as a member of the Academic Registrars' Council and currently as a governor at South & City College Birmingham.

His long-standing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion – currently evidenced through his role as the Senior Leadership Team’s Champion for LGBTQ+ equality at Royal Holloway – is a further, significant contribution to the Board.

Upon being appointed to the role, Stephen McAuliffe said: “The OIA plays a vital role in supporting and advocating for students, working with universities to reach positive outcomes. It’s a real honour to be joining the Board and I look forward to contributing to its work in the years ahead.”
