Professor Paul Layzell, Principal of Royal Holloway, University of London, has been made a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey.
Professor Layzell was appointed by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Mr Michael More- Molyneux and officially takes up the role today (21 December 2017).
Professor Layzell said: “I am honoured to take up the historic role of as a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey. I am looking forward to working with the Lord-Lieutenant and Vice Lord Lieutenant and the Deputy Lieutenant team to inspire and support the people living and working in Surrey. At Royal Holloway, our purpose is to advance knowledge to change our world and share that knowledge so we can make a sustained and meaningful contribution on campus and beyond. Working with the Lieutenancy in Surrey, we will be able to share this passion with the wider community.”
Representing the Royals
The Lord-Lieutenant is the Queen's personal representative in the county and is responsible for Royal visits to the county, involvement with the Magistracy, as well as participating in civic, voluntary and social ceremonies, and working with the local units of the Armed Forces and their cadets.
Deputy Lieutenants are chosen by the Lord-Lieutenant to support and promote the Lieutenancy in Surrey and to represent the Lord-Lieutenant at local ceremonies and official events. Professor Layzell is joining a distinguished group of Deputy Lieutenants from across Surrey.
