Tales of the Unexpected: how radar reveals the surprising links between tunnelling in London and the geology of Venus
Shilling Building Lecture Theatre
Professor Richard Ghail
Department of Earth Sciences
Radar was a necessary tool for imaging the surface of Venus through its global cloud layer in the 1990s. Since then, its use has impacted all areas of Earth science. It’s ability to measure changes at the millimetre per year level has made it invaluable for monitoring subsidence caused by Crossrail and other tunnels, but has also revealed geological movements never before seen, transforming our understanding of both Earth and Venus.
