Spring University Year 10 & 11

Across three days you’ll explore the different higher education options available to you, enjoy a range of activities, including subject taster sessions, meeting current university students, and a variety of social activities.

***Activities will take place online during live and pre-recorded sessions with some tasks away from the screen too using materials that we'll send to you.***

Academic activities

During the residential, you’ll take part in a programme of academic workshops, as well as information and guidance sessions about options available to you when you finish school like apprenticeships and university. We are working with our partners at HEON to deliver a wide range of subject activities. Our student ambassadors support these sessions, giving you real-life examples and tips about becoming a university student.

Social activities

During the few days you'll spend with us we'll give you the chance to make new friends and get an insight into the social side of university life. We will organise a set of social activities online to recreate some of the fun of a residential.

Arts and Social Sciences Summer University - Year 12

Over the course of three days, you’ll enjoy a range of activities, including subject taster sessions, meeting current university students, and a variety of social activities. 

1 day on campus

You’ll be invited to our campus on Tuesday 29th June to tour our facilities, meet current university students and take part in a variety of activities. We'll then give you a bag full of resources to use for the online activities throughout the week.

Academic activities

You’ll take part in a programme of academic workshops, as well as information and guidance sessions about university.

Workshops will be in a range of subjects that we offer, for example they might be in:

  • Business and Management
  • Classics
  • Drama, Theatre & Dance
  • Economics
  • English
  • History
  • Languages
  • Law, Criminology & Sociology
  • Media Arts
  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Politics and International Relations

Our student ambassadors support these sessions, giving you real-life examples and tips about becoming a university student.

Social activities

During the few days you'll spend with us online and in person on Tuesday 29th June we'll give you the chance to make new friends and get an insight into the social side of university life. We will organise a set of social events such as games, a quiz or watch along films each evening. 

Sciences Summer University - Year 12

Over the course of three days, you’ll enjoy a range of activities, including subject taster sessions, meeting current university students, and a variety of social activities. 

1 day on campus

You’ll be invited to our campus on Tuesday 6th July to tour our facilities, meet current university students and take part in a variety of activities. We'll then give you a bag full of resources to use for the online activities throughout the week

Academic activities

You’ll take part in a programme of academic workshops, as well as information and guidance sessions about university.

Workshops will be in a range of subjects that we offer, for example they might be in:

  • Biological Science
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Sciences
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Geography
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

Social activities

During the few days you'll spend with us online and in person on Tuesday 6th July, we'll give you the chance to make new friends and get an insight into the social side of university life. We will organise a set of social events such as games, a quiz or watch along films each evening. 

Who’s eligible to apply?

The Spring University is a collaboration between HEON and Royal Holloway, University of London.

To apply for the Spring University you must: 

  • Be in Year 10 or 11
  • Expected to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSEs grades 9-4
  • Do not attend a fee paying school
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years

You must also live in a HEON target postcode or meet at least 2 of the following criteria:

  • Both parents/guardians have no experience of higher education in the UK
  • You’re eligible for free school meals, pupil premium or other additional funding at school or college
  • You have a disability or health condition that impacts on your daily life
  • You’re living, or have lived, in Local Authority Care
  • You live in an area where relatively few people go on to study at university (click here to check for POLAR 4 Q1)
  • You identify as being from a black or minority ethnic background
  • You are a carer

To apply for Summer University you must:

  • Be in Year 12
  • Study A Level's or equivalent, predicted no lower than CCC (or equivalent)
  • Have 5 GCSEs grades 9 - 4 (A* - C)
  • Do not attend a fee-paying school
  • Have lived in the UK for at least three years

You must also meet at least 2 of the following criteria:

  • Both parents/guardians have no experience of higher education in the UK
  • You’re eligible for free school meals, pupil premium or post-16 bursary funding at school or college
  • You have a disability or health condition that impacts on your daily life
  • You’re living, or have lived, in Local Authority Care
  • You live in an area where relatively few people go on to study at university (click here to check for POLAR 4 Q1)
  • You identify as being from a black or minority ethnic background
  • You are a carer
