This scholarship is available to a new full-time student with Home or International fee status and is offered as a tuition fee reduction and living costs contribution (where applicable) to the value of £12,000.
Am I eligible?
You need to have achieved, or be expected to achieve, a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. You must also hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study one of the following courses:
- MA Holocaust Studies
- MA History
- MA Crusader Studies
- MA History: Hellenic Studies
- MA History: Public History
- MA Late Antique and Byzantine Studies
- MA Medieval Studies
How do I apply?
You must apply via our online system Royal Holloway Direct, where you will be able to complete your statement and upload any required documents including your grades transcript.
You will also need to provide an academic reference (see application guidelines below).
Applications must be submitted through RH Direct by 11.59pm (UK time) 11 July 2022. Applicants will be made aware of the outcome of their application after 26 July 2022.
Application guidelines
You must provide a supporting statement of no longer than 500 words (please note that statements that exceed the word count will automatically be rejected) which should include:
- academic achievements you are particularly proud of
- why have you chosen to do the degree you have applied for
- how will you use the MA in your future research and career path and how will the scholarship help you achieve it.
Your statement will be judged on how effectively and convincingly you respond to the above.
As well as your statement, you will need to upload your most recent grades transcript from your undergraduate degree. Any applications that are submitted without an uploaded transcript will be rejected.
You must have a written academic reference letter (up to 200 words). This must be submitted from an academic who has previously supported, taught or worked with you . Please ask the academic to email their reference letter (on official headed paper) directly to humanities-school@rhul.ac.uk

One scholarship is available to a new full-time student studying for a Masters degree within the Department of History.
Eligibility
This scholarship is open to new full-time students applying for one of the following courses:
- MA Holocaust Studies
- MA History
- MA Crusader Studies
- MA History: Hellenic Studies
- MA History: Public History
- MA Late Antique and Byzantine Studies
- MA Medieval Studies
and expected to have achieved, or are on target to achieve, a First Class Honours degree or equivalent.
Allocation
Students must submit a completed scholarship application form by the deadline, specified annually. This includes a scholarship statement, an academic reference and uploading transcripts to support the scholarship application. The academic reference should be emailed to humanities-school@rhul.ac.uk (on official headed paper) before the scholarship application deadline.
Payment
The scholarship is £12,000 to cover tuition fees and a contribution towards living costs. The scholarship will offer full tuition fee reduction and the remainder will be paid, in instalments, directly to the recipient as a contribution towards living costs. This scholarship is only available for one year of study. No additional payment is offered in any following years if the duration of the course is longer than one year.
Please note: If the student is eligible for any automatic Royal Holloway tuition fee discounts (including Alumni discount)*, such discounts are not available in conjunction with any scholarship which offers a full tuition fee reduction (including those with an additional cash award) or with CPD courses.
Where a discount is applicable:
- The discount is made on the fee amount payable following any other reductions, i.e. a scholarship, early payment discount
- The discount is available on the tuition fees for the first year of study only, whether full or part-time.
