Research Interests:
My research focuses on the formation and evolution of ancient cultural identities and economic
developments through an examination of past foodways. Using archaeobotanical remains, I explore
past consumption practices, regional dietary differences, sensory experiences, and the use of
alternative fuel sources. I am also interested in sustainable food production and shifts in dietary
practices in the face of globalization and climate change, both past and present.
I am currently the environmental director on the NYU/Oxford excavations at Aphrodisias, the Harvard/Cornell excavations at Sardis (Türkiye), the Saint Mary’s (Canada) Villa of Titus project, and the BSR/Toronto/Harvard excavations at Falerii Novi (Italy). The archaeobotanical datasets from these sites range in date from the 10th century BC to the 12th century AD with Late Antique to early Ottoman material from Aphrodisias, Lydian and Roman material from Sardis, and Roman and Late Antique material from Italy.
