Mental Health and Quality of Life in Paediatric Chronic Illness Populations

Medical outcomes have steadily improved for children living with a chronic illness in the United Kingdom as treatments advances have increased survival rates. However, intense chronic treatment regimens, the need for long-term daily medication, frequent clinic visits and hospitalisations, and procedures that might limit the ability to attend school and engage in social activities increase the risk of behavioural and emotional problems that impact quality of life. A significant portion of children experience mental health problems related to their chronic health conditions that can adversely impact regimen adherence and health outcomes. Therefore, it is important to consider the evidence-based treatments that are available to address these problems. During this seminar, we will discuss the utilisation and effectiveness of mental health treatments (e.g., cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness) in paediatric chronic illness populations, address barriers that exist and impede the delivery of psychological and behavioural interventions, and methods to monitor and subsequently intervene to improve quality of life.
