New spectroscopic perspective of quantum materials

To initiate and foster collaborations in the exciting area of strongly correlated quantum many body systems, the Hubbard Theory Consortium ’s Summer Programme ‘Condensed Matter Physics in the City’ aims to bring together condensed matter theorists and experimentalists from the UK and abroad.

Following on from successes of the last years, a new edition of the ‘Condensed Matter in the City’ summer programme has been scheduled for 2018. The events will take place at Bedford Square in central London; at Royal Holloway University of London; and at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. There will be a wide range of talks aimed at stimulating discussions between theorists and experimentalists.

The main focus of Condensed Matter Physics in the City 2018 is to promote a new spectroscopic perspective of quantum materials, bringing together the many exciting new developments in experimental spectroscopy and theoretical viewpoints.

Condensed matter in the City, 2018 will bring together students, faculty and guest speakers, drawing both on the local expertise in ARPES and neutron spectroscopy, combined with outside expertise in areas such as laser ARPES and STM to ask:

  • How can we attain a new synthesis in our understanding of the spectroscopy of quantum matter?

  • What new parameters can we devise to quantify the changes in the entanglement between localized and delocalized electrons in the new spectroscopies?

  • How do we probe for new forms of order, such as composite or odd frequency pairing?

  • Most importantly: what aspects of our current dogma need to be revised to bring them in line with the new information and resolution revealed by the new spectroscopies?

ICAM Junior Travel Award - deadline on 25 May

Condensed Matter Physics in the City can fully fund about ten junior scientists from Europe to attend one week of the meeting and present their work. CMPCity and ICAM are committed to improving diversity in physics; we therefore particularly welcome applications from female scientists. For these purposes, junior scientist is taken to mean a student studying for their PhD or a Post Doc within two years of finishing their PhD, and preference will be given to people affiliated to one of the ICAM nodes (see  Application is now closed.
