The Department of Media Arts are thrilled to announce great results in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Our research outputs were ranked in 2nd position amongst all UK universities for “world-leading” research (rated 4*).

Media Arts research outputs included books, scholarly articles, collections and special editions alongside films, documentaries, radio plays and digital artworks. 93% has been rated either 4* – world-leading – or 3*– internationally excellent. 

Media Arts was ranked 7th in UK media departments for the overall quality of our research. 

Our outstanding results reflect stellar research across theoretical, critical and practice-based approaches to film, television, sound and digital media in Royal Holloway Media Arts. These are at the heart of our teaching and core to our creative, critical community.
