The Department of History offers two postgraduate research degrees: the MA by Research and the PhD. Royal Holloway is noted for the breadth of its research with over thirty permanent academic staff members and over ninety doctoral students.
Their interests range chronologically from ancient to contemporary times, geographically from Britain and Europe to America, the Middle and Far East, and South Asia, and thematically from political to economic, social, cultural, intellectual, medical, environmental, and gender history.
Doctoral students benefit from subject-specific training offered by the department, such as Greek palaeography, Latin and Oral History, and from the Researcher Development Programme organised by the college. Financial assistance is provided to pursue language courses elsewhere in London and to help with attendance at conferences and travel to archives.
If you’re considering applying for the History PhD, first see if there is a member of staff working in your area of interest, and get in touch.
