Field trip to Cyprus

Cyprus is a fascinating location in which to explore many current debates within human geography.

Cyprus is a fascinating location in which to explore many current debates within human geography. The division of the island into two with a buffer zone policed by the United Nations following conflict in the 1970s, provides a unique opportunity to consider political geography themes around governance and borders. Students can also focus on current or historical social and cultural topics relating to identity, use of space and community-building between the Greek and Turkish communities, as well as other migrants and visitors.

The fieldtrip is based in Nicosia and includes two days of staff-led activities, and then students work on their own projects in small groups advised by a staff member. There is preparatory work before the trip, including a contextual essay. The fieldtrip is assessed through a 6,000 word report.
