Research activity in Physics is divided between the Centre for Particle Physics and the grouping of Quantum Materials & Technologies.

The Centre for Particle Physics (CPP)

CPP hosts research sub-groups in: Accelerator Science; the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC); Dark Matter & Neutrino Physics; and Theoretical Particle Physics. This grouping maps directly onto the STFC’s Frontier Physics Research Areas. The experimental programme is supported by laboratory infrastructure, advanced computing facilities, and facilities at major international laboratories (CERN, FNAL, J-PARC, KEK, LNGS, SNOLAB, SURF). During REF2021 the Centre was awarded £12.2M in grants.

Quantum Materials & Technologies (QMT)

QMT hosts four sub-groups: Condensed Matter Theory; Nanophysics & Nanotechnology; Quantum Matter; Quantum Fluids & Solids. Research is enhanced by departmental fabrication facilities and laboratories, which include the UK Centre for Superconducting and Hybrid Quantum Systems (SuperFab) and the London Low Temperature Laboratory (LLTL, a member of the European Microkelvin Platform, a European Advanced Infrastructure), as well as external facilities such as ISIS, the Diamond Light Source, ESRF, ILL and FRMII, and within the Hubbard Theory Consortium (HTC). During REF2021 this grouping was awarded £14.6M in grants.
