Paula Antela Costa - Language Tutor in Spanish

Paula Antela Costa - Language Tutor in Spanish

I have been a Language Tutor in Spanish within the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures since September 2022. I teach Spanish across all levels and I convene both the Spanish Language Post A-Level and Complete beginners modules in Second Year. I also teach the beginners courses in the Languages For All programme.

I graduated in English and French Studies in 2017 at the University of Santiago de Compostela. I also completed an MA in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the University of Seville in 2018 and a PGCE in English at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2020.

My teaching experience started when I taught Spanish to political refugees in Seville, probably the most challenging and rewarding experience of my career so far. Since then, I have worked as a Spanish teacher in a Secondary School in Bordeaux as well as in the Instituto Cervantes in Dublin and in Bordeaux. I also delivered tailor-made Spanish courses for all levels at the University of Santiago de Compostela, as part of the International Students Programme. All this experience allowed me to work as a Spanish Tutor at the University of Liverpool for two years (2020-2022) where I started my experience in HE in the UK.

I now work within the Department to deliver language courses which are up-to-date and challenge my students' critical thinking.

My research interests are pedagogy, gender studies, comics and digital humanities, and I always try to combine them in my classes to offer a complete and significant learninng experience. I also specialize in the use of gamification to teach foreign languages (more specifically, escape rooms). At the same time, I try to keep up-to-date with new teaching methodologies and innovative pedagogies, which is why I am part of three Special Interest Groups: one focused on the decolonization of the Spanish curriculum in HE, another on the creation of digital portoflios and another on Innovation in HE through the ECO methodology. The latter, in collaboration with the University of Seville, has allowed me and my students to colaborate with other institutions and create a project based on how to improve society and our communities.

I am also an active member of the Association for the Teaching of Spanish in Higher Education in the United Kingdom (ELEUK), being part of their comittee as Webmaster.

All my experience, research and publications can be found on my Linkedin page and my Orcid profile.
