Congratulations to Iain Moffatt, Professor of Mathematics at Royal Holloway, University of London, who was recently announced as the new Deputy Director of The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences.
Professor Moffatt will join the INI on a part-time secondment from Royal Holloway, University of London, where he was Head of the Department of Mathematics until summer 2026.
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Iain Moffatt said,
“I’m delighted to be joining the INI team. As a research mathematician I have benefited greatly from the support and activities of the INI, and am excited to have the opportunity to get involved in delivering and promoting its mission. I’m looking forward to engaging with mathematicians across the UK in all research areas and supporting the best mathematical research nationally and internationally.”
As part of the INI’s senior leadership team, the Deputy Director plays a central role in helping to shape and deliver the INI’s academic vision. Working closely with the Director, Professor Moffatt will support the development of the Institute’s research programme, help organisers and visiting scholars realise the full potential of INI activities, and champion the Institute across the UK and internationally.
Iain Moffatt's research at Royal Holloway spans algebraic combinatorics, topological graph theory, matroid theory and knot theory, with a particular interest in problems where combinatorics meets topology.
