You have reached the end of term! It’s been hectic and stressful at times, but I hope that you've enjoyed the academic journey this Autumn term, that you have had several moments of intellectual excitement in lectures, seminars and during independent study, enjoyed your interactions with your tutors and made many new friends.
A few more news items and a recap of events in the last couple of weeks, before I extend my Christmas wishes to you all.

The Classics Society Symposium on “Medicine and Disability in the Ancient World”
On 29 November the Classics Society put on an excellent Symposium that brought together students, undergraduate and postgraduate, alumni and staff. We all enjoyed four high-quality papers about a range of sources on different aspects disability in the Ancient Greek and Roman World. Dr Liz Gloyn offered some useful methodological points and veryhelpful reminders about different attitudes and perspectives that prevailed in the Roman world. There was quite a lot of laughter too, largely due to Dr Hannah Baldwin who was testing …Humour Theory on the audience! Meanwhile Dr Brady surveyed historiographical references to over-dramatic displays of valour by Roman generals, very often far from the battlefield. We all agreed that this was a fantastic co-curricular event and hope that our indefatigable Classics Society can organise another Symposium in Term 2!

The Classics Society - Classics Staff Christmas Social
This Monday, staff and students got together for a brief but relaxing end-of-term gathering. Once again organised by our Classics Society, this was a wonderful opportunity to chat, to unwind and to enjoy some Christmassy music, non-alcoholic refreshments and… pizza! I enjoyed talking to many students and was delighted to see so many happy, if a little tired, faces. A few pictures below- (those of you on Instagram saw them first!)
A recent Classics Alumna
One of our recent alumnae, Zoe Norman (BA Classical Studies 2021) was recently interviewed by the RHUL Communications Team. Read her story on the College Intranet and be inspired: https://intranet.royalholloway.ac.uk/students/jobs-careers/careers-blogs/careers-blog-articles/working-in-local-government-and-the-ngdp.aspx
The Classics Department on Instagram
Following conversations with students at the Social on Monday, I felt that a Departmental Instagram account would help reinforce the sense of community in the Classics Department, would complement this newsletter and help disseminate information more widely and effectively. In 4 days we have reached 135 followers, including several alumni and alumnae. I want students and staff to contribute to our Instagram, just as to the newsletter, and to make it a reflection of “life in the Department”.
I wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and successful new Year! Enjoy the holidays and see you all in 2024!
Christos
