  • Date12 January 2024

Dear Classicists, Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a relaxing break and a chance to recharge your batteries ahead of the Spring Term. I also hope that the addition of the College “Spring Term Assessment Period” (8th-12th January), has helped you finalize assessments without the added pressure of attending lectures/seminars. Teaching resumes on Monday 15th January.

In this issue are:

  1. “Meet the academic” and Co-working Sessions
  2. Exciting Careers Event with participants including former Classics students
  3. Who to contact and how to provide feedback to us
  4. Classics feedback form ahead of the next Student-Staff Action Meeting

“Meet the academic” & Co-working Sessions

Dr Gloyn emailed you all about these two events, but I should also like to remind you that our “meet the academic” informal event takes place on Wednesday 17th January (4-5pm) in the Shilling Lecture Theatre. This is your chance to find out more about Dr Emilio Zucchetti’s research interests and to spend time socializing in the foyer at the end. Just before the “Meet the Academic”, you can go to our co-working session from 2-3pm in International 148 (the slot and venue stay the same until Study Week). Please go back to Dr Gloyn’s email to find out more on why this might be helpful for you.

Humanities “Meet the Grads” Night 2024: Tuesday 16th January (6-7:30pm) Shilling Building

The Careers Service has a full line-up of events for humanities students this term, starting with next week’s “Meet the Grads” evening event where you’ll hear about a selection of career paths (PR & Communications, Journalism, Publishing, Heritage, Public Sector and Charity, Teaching) from former Royal Holloway humanities students. Full details and booking here!

Who to contact and how to provide us with feedback

Just a quick reminder of the different options you all have if you want to ask questions (academic, pastoral) or raise any concerns you may have: a) your Personal Tutor (PT) should be your first port of call; they should be able to advise you whether you should approach someone else in the department; b) if the issue, question or concern relates to one of your modules, it is preferable if you talk to your module tutor first, although in some cases it might be better for you to go straight to your PT.  The PT is best placed to direct you to any relevant role holders in the Department. c) If you feel that you have exhausted all other avenues or the issue is particularly serious and urgent, please come and see me during my Open Office Hour on Monday from 16:00 to 16:45 (please email me first).

You can also provide feedback through your course reps (see also the link under #3 below): any issues they identify are discussed at the Student-Staff Action Meetings. The next one is scheduled for the end of this month. Another means of collecting feedback is through module questionnaires and other surveys. Please be assured that we take your feedback seriously and make changes, where possible (I am afraid there are certain areas that we have no control over). However, these questionnaires and surveys are also an opportunity for you all to recognise all the good things that we do in the Department and the effort that your tutors are putting into teaching! So, next time you receive an email asking you to complete a module survey/questionnaire, why don’t you invest 5-10 mins of your time? Your feedback can make a difference!

Classics feedback form: could you please fill in this survey?

Have a relaxing weekend!
