Plurality and Hybridity in Gustav Mahler’s Wunderhorn-Symphonies

In this seminar, I would like to focus on the plurality of idioms and style as well as the hybridization of expression. For this purpose, I will discuss Michail Bakhtin’s concept of heteroglossia in the literary novel in order to consider Gustav Mahler’s first four symphonies from this theoretical perspective.

Federico Celestini was born in Rome. Since October 2011 he has been Full Professor at the Department of Music, University of Innsbruck, Austria. In 2010 he led the project Giacinto Scelsi and Austria, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and since 2011 has been Co-Editor of Acta MusicologicaHe is the current Vice-president of the Austrian Society for Musicologya Member of the Board of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), and President of the Austrian Society for Musicology. Since 2018 he has been leading the partial project "Performativity" inside the D-A-CH Project Writing Music. Iconic, performative, operative, and material aspects in musical notation(s)Since 2018 he has been a corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
