As part of its exploration of the intersections of creative practice and academic research, Think Deep has a number of residencies and commissions that enable artists and creative practitioners to join the team. Some of these commissions and residencies have very specific briefs, based on particular topics or country locations, others are much more open, please see the drop-down menus for further details. The works produced in the residencies and commissions, as well as that produced by the project team, will be documented in a project ‘catalogue’ with both on and off-line formats. Further information will be posted here as the commissions and residencies open. If you have any questions about open opportunities, please use the 'Email us' button to get in touch with the Thinking Deep team.
Designer-artist in Residence
The Thinking Deep team are looking for a designer or artist in residence who is interested to work with the team to develop a ‘catalogue’ that collects together the creative practice produced during the Thinking Deep project. We are seeking someone interested in working on a project at the interface of creative practice and academic research, and with a range of different forms of creative practice, from textiles, installation and performance work to creative writing.
Sophal Neak: Cambodia Residency
Sophal Neak is artist in residence working with the Thinking Deep team to explore extraction in Cambodia. Neak uses photography and portraiture to explore ongoing struggles within Cambodian society. Building on her ongoing work on the politics of identity and aesthetics, Neak’s image-making practice considers questions of the hidden, marginal and unseen, including the lives of women, rural communities and communities at risk.
Cambodia Commissions
Thinking Deep has three commissions for early career Cambodian artists or artists based in South East Asia with an interest in issues in Cambodia. These commissions will develop work around the Cambodian subsurface, whether underground or underwater. Please come back for further details.
Other Commissions
Counter-Mapping Extraction Commission
This commission will explore the counter-mapping of artisanal extraction practices in Cambodia. The research team have collected a series of data, including images, text and video of artisanal practices of gem and gold mining and the livelihoods and landscapes associated with these practices. We are interested to commission either an artist interested in counter-mapping or a designer interested in spatial practices and/or extraction to explore ways to ‘map’ these materials that are sensitive to the challenges of artisanal extraction practices. Please come back for further details.
