Joining us in September? Our whole department is looking forward to getting to know you. We’ve put together some activities and videos for you to access prior to joining us.
Get an introduction on what your education will look like in September. From practicals to fieldwork, we understand how important hands on experience is for our students and we've put measures in place to allow us to deliver this safely.
If you want to check out some background reading early, here's a sample copy of our reading list!
Welcome to the Department
Fieldwork brings together all aspects of the taught programme in Earth Sciences, as well as providing a chance for staff and students to get to know each other as a community. The fieldwork programme is designed to provide progressive training over years 1 and 2 in preparation for fieldwork associated with year 3 dissertation projects, involving either geological mapping or environmental data collection.
Find out more about what fieldwork involves by having a read of an example field guide from our first year Devon Fieldtrip, as well as our guide to general field skills:
Prepare for fieldwork with some open access Geographical Information Systems software by following the handy introduction guide below. This uses an open source software called QGIS, which you can download for free by following this link:
https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html
You’ll also need the instruction manual, and to download the JPEG file of a geological map of the UK!
And experiences to look forward to....
Be prepared
