Newsletter - 27th November

  • Date27 November 2023

I hope you have all had a chance to relax over the weekend. I am afraid that last week’s issue could not be circulated on Friday. So, this is a “start-of-the-week newsletter”.

Dear Classicists,

I shall keep it short - only three short items!

Classics Pre-Christmas Social

The Classics Society and the members of staff of the Department are organizing a pre-Christmas social on the 4th of December (next Monday) at 4pm. Please mark the date and time in your diary. You will soon receive the invite from the Classics Society – make sure you RSVP.  I hope that this will be a popular event that will help us all wind down a little at the end of what has been a stressful term.

Classics Society Symposium: Medicine and Disability in the Ancient World

Date: Wednesday 29 November from 6pm to 9pm

Venue: Founders Lecture Theatre

Programme/Speakers and Titles of talks

  • Dr Liz Gloyn - Understanding Disability in Ancient Rome
  • Dr Tim Brady - Livy and the Politics of Scars
  • Dr Hannah Baldwin - Doctor, Doctor, there’s an analysis in my joke: Examining Doctor Jokes in the Philogelos
  • Prof. Christos Kremmydas - Disability Allowance in Classical Athens

The topics of the talks sound really exciting and I can’t wait to be part of this symposium that the Classics Society is organising. It is great that we can have such co-curricular events that complement what we do in our regular teaching engagements. I hope to see many of you there!

The “Myth and Voice” project is advertising three internships (two Postgraduate and one UG [2nd year] level)

This opportunity suits enthusiastic, pro-active and self-reliant individuals who are keen to develop skills and experience in: co-creation and student-led syllabus design; in working with young people; in getting involved with programs of active citizenship and community programs, more broadly; in storytelling and applied theatre as community building tools. For further details, see the advert and email Dr Efi Spentzou with any questions. Please note that the deadline for submission of applications is this Friday 1 December 2023.

I hope you all have a productive week!

Best wishes,

Christos
