Abstract:
The market for self-transformation is exploding. Especially in these accelerated times, with increased numbers of mental and physical issues, consumers increasingly seek out market offers to self-transform. Drawing from Appau & Ozanne's (2020) concept of permanent liminality, this working paper aims to investigate permanently self-transforming consumers who engage recurrently in transformational experiences for therapeutic benefits. Ethnographic research in Catholic pilgrimage sites in Latin America and Europe uncover a processual understanding of the infinite cycle of consumer search for self-transformation in the spiritual marketplace. This research contributes to the development of the concept of the permanent self-transforming consumer and the discussion of postmodern consumption practices and its societal impacts.

Jannsen Santana is a Ph.D. student (3rd year) in Management Science at ESCP Business School (Panthéon-Sorbonne Doctoral Programme) in Paris - France, under the supervision of Prof. Olivier Badot. He received his M.Sc in Business at FGV EAESP (2018), and B.S in Business at the Federal University of Cariri - UFCA (2015). Since 2016, Jannsen has been researching the intersection of consumption and spirituality, mainly designing ethnographic research in pilgrimages in Latin America and Europe.
