Understanding impact

What is impact?

SSIA impact projects should focus on effecting change for individuals outside of academia.

Impact IS...

  • “The demonstrable contribution that excellent research makes to society and the economy.” UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
  • “An effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy or services, health, the environment or quality of life, beyond academia.” Research England & Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • “The provable effects (benefits) of research in the ‘real world’. Julie Bayley, Author of Creating Meaningful Impact

Impact is NOT...

  • Just dissemination (although this can be a small part of a wider Impact project).
  • Academic citations or other bibliometrics
  • Markers of attention
  • Markers of academic reputation
  • Within the HE sector
  • Engagement alone

There are three different types of impact. SSIA projects might focus on just one type of impact, or combine all three:

  • INSTRUMENTAL: A new or changed tangible ‘thing’. (i.e., knowledge, insight, method, process, tool, practice, policy, service, etc.)
  • CAPACITY: A new or increased ability to do something. (i.e., skills, opportunities, connections, networks, partnerships, etc.)
  • CONCEPTUAL: A change or new way in how something is thought about. (i.e. a change in understanding, attitude, awareness, attention, perception, perspective, etc.)
