Royal Holloway starts a STAR chapter!
Royal Holloway has started a new chapter of Student Action for Refugees (STAR). STAR is a national organisation dedicated to ‘building a more understanding and just society where refugees are welcomed and can thrive in the UK’.[1]Our brand-new RHUL chapter will join the ranks of 42 groups across the country to show solidarity with refugees, people seeking asylum, and others facing forced migration in the UK.
STAR aims to educate the RHUL community about refugees’ lived experiences and public policy while we make our campus an inclusive, welcoming community for all. Our activities fall under three main categories: volunteering, campaigning, and raising awareness. Members can gain skills in leadership, organising, and communications through letter writing, organising film screenings, hosting fundraising events, and so much more. Some of our planned projects include a quilting bee, a seminar series, and a film night, and we are very excited to hear more ideas from potential members!
We sit within a national organisation that stresses partnerships with local agencies, education and awareness campaigns, and democracy. STAR provides members with resources and information as well as expert training in multiple areas from language use to organising principles to tips for direct action.
This society is open to students at all levels and is free to join!
