Celebrating Our International Students: UKCISA #WeAreInternational Awards 2025

Mussa UKCISA

Royal Holloway's first Duolingo Sanctuary Access Scholar, Mussa, took to the stage to present an award on the night.

Celebrating international students felt real last week as colleagues from Royal Holloway joined our first Duolingo Sanctuary Access Scholar, Mussa, at the inaugural UKCISA #WeAreInternational Awards 2025. Mussa took the stage to present an award on the night, which was a wonderful moment for everyone who has supported his path.

Our partners at Duolingo were there to mark the occasion with us and sponsored the Event. It was great to share this moment with Emily and Dan from Refugee Education UK, whose partnership keeps growing and keeps shaping the support we offer students and it was nice to catch up as always with Heather from UKCISA.

A few simple takeaways from the night:

  • Recognition matters, and it motivates students who often work twice as hard.
  • Partnership work creates chances that would be hard to make alone.
  • Seeing Mussa present an award bolstered those who work behind the scenes to continue in their meaningful work to create impactful scholarship opportunities.

The event was a reminder that you help build opportunities each time you support a student, remove a barrier, or open a door. Julia Jago was also nominated for an award on the night for her work supporting international students.

What moments like this help you measure impact in your own work?

Thank you to everyone across the university who are supporting our international students as well as those who have sought Sanctuary with us.
