Impressions of Modern Life Tour
Watch Dr Rachel Sloan, of The Courtauld, discuss Gauguin, Redon and Denis

Avant-garde artists in late 19th-century France upended many time-honoured conventions of book illustration - not least, the relationship between text and image.

In this film, Dr Rachel Sloan, Assistant Curator of Works on Paper at The Courtauld Gallery, discusses some of these changes in the work of three such artists: Maurice Denis, Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon.
