Magna Carta lectures

Magna Carta lectures

From 2005-2025, Royal Holloway held two ten-year series of Magna Carta lectures, made possible by the generosity of two donors: The Magna Carta 800th Anniversary Commemoration Committee and the charity, Runnymede Magna Carta Legacy.

The lectures celebrated and reflected upon the traditions of liberty and the rule of law that the Magna Carta enshrined and has come to symbolise – touching on these themes through history, the law and politics.

They provided a fruitful opportunity for leading figures in public life, including senior judges, politicians, historians and others, to reflect on the Charter’s key idea of freedom under the law, its significance for us today, and how the ideal of freedom might be entrenched and safeguarded in the future.

Royal Holloway runs a wide range of public lectures and events throughout the year, sharing the knowledge of our academic community and invited guests with our community. See our calendar of forthcoming events.
