Margaret Hodge, Baroness Hodge of Barking has long been at the forefront of the fight against dirty money and corruption in the UK, UK overseas territories and globally. In this For What Matters lecture, Lady Hodge discusses her experiences from Chair of the Public Accounts Committee and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Tax to her current role as the Prime Minister’s Anti-Corruption Champion. She highlights why tackling money laundering matters, explains the damage that dirty money poses to society, and suggests what more government, organisations and we as individuals can do to fight corruption.
After serving as the Leader of Islington London Borough Council from 1982 to 1992, Baroness Hodge was elected as the Member of Parliament for Barking and Dagenham from 1994 to 2024. In her time as a Member of Parliament, she served as a Minister in the Governments of Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, holding portfolios in the Departments for Education, Work and Pensions, Business, and Culture. She was the first Children’s Minister from 2003 to 2005, Minister for Universities from 2001 to 2003 and Minister for the Arts and the Creative Industries. She served as Chair of the Public Accounts Committee from 2010 to 2015 and was Chair of Council of Royal Holloway from 2018 to 2025.
