Marilynne Morgan CB (née Williams) Bedford College History 1967 died on 12 July 2025 after a long illness.
Marilynne had a distinguished career as one of the Government’s most senior lawyers. After an initial spell in the Foreign Office as a research assistant she took a law conversion course and was called to the Middle Temple in 1972, then joined the Legal Department of the Department of Health and Social Security (known also as the Department of Stealth and Total Obscurity). She rose to become their Principal Solicitor and subsequently transferred to the Department of Environment and Transport, serving as the Senior Director Legal and Corporate Services and a Board member. She then moved as the top lawyer to the Department for Work and Pensions, retiring in 2004. She was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1996.
Marilynne was also an active member of Middle Temple, serving on many of its key Committees, including Wine, Finance and Catering, and was particularly proud of her election as Master of the Kitchen. Her many other activities included being Chair of the University Women’s Club, a Trustee of the Alzheimer’s Society, and Chair of the Friends of Buckinghamshire’s Historic Churches Trust.
