Bedford College alumnus Martin Latham (History, 1978) celebrates the joy, history, and eccentricities of book-loving culture in his acclaimed book, The Bookseller’s Tale.
Martin Latham’s The Bookseller’s Tale is a warm, witty, and insightful look at our enduring love affair with books. Drawing on over three decades as a bookseller, Martin takes readers through the quirky, fascinating history of reading and book-buying - from mythical libraries and street stalls to eccentric collectors and devoted bookshop customers.
The book blends cultural history with memoir, exploring the many ways books shape our lives. With stories of comfort reads, annotated margins, and even the excavation of a Roman bath-house beneath a bookshop floor, The Bookseller’s Tale is both a celebration of literature and of the spaces that bring it to life.
Accessible and delightfully anecdotal, the book is ideal for bibliophiles, history lovers, and anyone who has ever found comfort in the pages of a book.
