Royal Holloway’s Green Travel Plan has been developed to help reduce the University’s carbon footprint and also traffic congestion on its Surrey campus and in the local community.
Whilst championing inclusivity, to do this it promotes a suite of travel incentives and measures that seek to reduce single occupancy vehicle use amongst students and staff in favour of more sustainable travel modes - all in line with our Environmental Policy’s travel hierarchy (below).

More widely, the plan also addresses international and domestic business travel (for work and education) as well as the journeys made by the University’s international students to and from the UK.
The following five-year targets, to be monitored annually, will help guide our efforts to reduce our travel-related carbon emissions:
- Reduce student single occupancy car journeys by 3%
- Reduce staff single occupancy car journeys by 5%
- Reduce single occupancy car journeys by 3%
- Increase train travel by 2% and shared car journeys by 1%
- Double the EV charging facilities on campus from 8 to 16 bays
Some of the plan’s initiatives that are now either in place, or under development, include:
- Enhancing cycling infrastructure, including secure storage and shower and changing facilities
- Launching an Electric Vehicle (EV) staff salary sacrifice scheme
- Installing more car charging points across campus
- Reviewing and promoting the existing cycle to work scheme and other staff benefits (including public transport discounts)
- Enforcing train-only travel across mainland U and high-speed train serviced European locations
