Christmas Volunteering

Christmas is a great season to volunteer your time and energy into serving the needs of others. Often it is full of festive fun and cheer, whilst meeting the very real needs for members of the local community.

Christmas Volunteering is the perfect time to lend a helping hand to others. A number of the volunteer opportunities are for exclusive involvement of Royal Holloway students and staff.

Love in a Box - Deadline is Monday 23 November

Community Action's special Christmas project in partnership with Trussell Trust, where we aim to bring good tidings to underpriveldged children in Bulgaria by sending decorated shoeboxes filled with gifts. As an extra incentive the best decorated box wins a prize.

This year over 140 boxes were donated.

Santa’s workshop - Wednesday 9 December 12noon - 1pm

Community Action's long running Christmas project in partnership with Age UK Runnymede & Spelthorne, where we wrap and donate presents to elderly people within the local community. Get involved by donating items in the collection points around campus, and come to wrap the gift items, write a Christmas card, and create a bag in the Students' Union main hall. Santa's hats, seasonal music and festive food are provided for all volunteers!

This year over 120 gift bags were delivered.

Friends of the Elderly Volunteering- 12th, 15th 18th December

Our Community Partner Voluntary Action in Spelthorne is looking for volunteers to assist residents at the Friends of the Elderly Care Home on 12th, 15th and 18th December. Volunteers will be giving out food to residents as well as encouraging them to participate in Christmas activities.

Egham Christmas Fair-Saturday 12th December 9am-4pm 

Stay around for an extra day to help spread Christmas cheer in the local community and stock up on stocking fillers. Volunteers are needed to help with children's arts and crafts activities, gift wrapping and Christmas stalls ion Egham High Street.

Elmsleigh Centre Christmas Wrapping- 23rd December

Volunteers are needed to wrap Christmas presents at the Elmsleigh centre in Staines between 9.30 amd and 6pm. All proceeds will go towards Shopmobility.

Winter Shelter- January to March  

Voluntary Action Spelthorne is going to be opening a Winter Shelter in the Staines area from January to March 2016 and they are looking for volunteers to help support the shelter by working as part of a team to prepare food and providing an essential lifeline during the coldest and wettest time of the year. Volunteers will be needed between the hours of 4pm and 7pm.

Merlewood Christmas Fayre- 5th December 

 Volunteers are needed to help out at the Merlewood Xmas Fayre from 1pm till 5pm. Volunteers will be helping to run a raffle, manage stalls and greet visitors when they arrive!

Christmas Lunch at the Village Centre-25th December

The Village Centre in Englefield Green is offering a Christmas lunch to people in the local community on Christmas day. If you would like to join in the meal is free but you must email us in advance to let us know.


Salvation Army Christmas Lunch - 25th December   

If you are still here on Christmas day the Salvation Army in Ashford will be serving Christmas Lunch to local people in the community who are alone on this festive day. Volunteer drivers are needed to collect and return guests, and there are also opportunities to help with food preparation and making goodie bags. If you would like to know more, send us an email.

Save the Children

A number of Save the Children Projects are taking place across London this festive season. Volunteers are required for a number of projects in December including Christmas Jumper Day, and Christmas carol singing.

Crisis Christmas Centres - late December

 Are you one of the over 10,000 volunteers who will help more than 4,000 homeless guests this Christmas? We need people with specialist skills (like dentists, hairdressers, lorry drivers and performers) as well as an army of general volunteers ready to muck in. General volunteers need no special expertise - tasks involve welcoming guests to the centres, serving food and generally making sure things go to plan.


Birchland’s Christmas Bazaar TBC

Birchland’s is a care home in Englefield Green specialising in dementia. This Christmas they are holding a Christmas bazaar for their residents and local people to raise funds for the organisation. Help will be needed throughout the day manning the stalls, selling raffle tickets, setting up and clearing down and running an information stall about the care home.

Egham Christmas Kitchen - late December

Christmas Kitchen is a Christian community initiative which aims to provide a safe, supportive café style environment for the people of Egham. Based on Egham High Street, they will be offering light refreshments at no charge, and the opportunity to participate in crafts, board games, have access to support services, and continuity of community activities throughout the Christmas period. The Kitchen need volunteers to help out serving food, clearing up and possibly running activities. 

British Transport Police

The British Transport police have a number of events taking place in London over the festive period. With their City Safe Haven, Operation Christmas Hardball and other Christmas operations there are many opportunities for volunteers to get involved. This is an opportunity to help protect the public at Christmas by distributing leaflets or talking to members of the public in order to educate them as to how they can prevent being victims of theft or antisocial behaviour. 

Rotary Club Christmas Collections - 8, 9, 10, 11, and 15, 16, 17, 18 December

The Egham branch of rotary annually organises a festive street collection during mid December to raise much needed funds for local charitable causes.Help is needed each evening to assist with the collection in the local community and surrounding areas. Great opportunity to get in the festive spirit and involve your group of friends in something positive and fun this Christmas.

London Air Ambulance

Christmas is such a great time to volunteer for London’s Air Ambulance as it really is great fun getting into the festive spirit and you get to give back to the community all at the same time! Events taking place across London throughout December.
