Clinical Associate Psychologist (Children and Young People) (MSc)
This course is available for UK (Home) applicants only. To study this MSc course, you must be a student on a Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAPS) programme and you must be selected and funded by the NHS Trust you work for.
This NHS Clinical Psychology training scheme at apprentice (MSc) level combines research led teaching within our department with the supervision of clinical psychologists in London NHS Trusts to conduct practical, clinical work focusing on working with Children and Young People.
Students on Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAPS) programmes are selected and funded through the apprenticeship scheme by the Trust who employs them.
On successful completion of the course, graduates can apply for Clinical Associate Psychologist posts in the NHS.
Teaching & assessment
CAPs are employed by an NHS Trust and are taught two days a week at Royal Holloway. The other three days they conduct practical, clinical work in the employing Trust under the supervision of clinical psychologists. London NHS Trusts will select students and commission programme places.
CAPs are typically trained to work with one population and the Royal Holloway programme will focus on working with Children and Young People. The curriculum includes 6 modules to develop a range of clinical, academic and research skills and requires students to develop critical and reflective skills to support their clinical practice. Lectures, reflective seminars and skills based workshops will be used to support and engage all student learning styles across a range of abilities.
Students will be expected to undertake some additional study outside of teaching and placement but this will be a to a lesser extent as teaching and placement time is extensive. Study days will be built into the timetable and will mainly be during placement time outside of term.
All students will have a Personal Tutor as well as a placement supervisor.
Assessments focus on developing a clinical portfolio in line with the apprenticeship assessment model. This will include observational ratings of practice, practice placement evaluation forms, clinical case reports, clinical case oral presentations, and an NHS based research project with literature review. Programme Tutors and supervisors will individually track student progress and conduct evaluations to ensure student fulfil the requirements of the CAPs programme as detailed by the British Psychological Society.

Fees, funding & scholarships
Home (UK) students tuition fee per year*: £Fee covered by employer
Other essential costs***: There are no single associated costs greater than £50 per item on this course.
How do I pay for it? Find out more about funding options, including loans, grants, scholarships and bursaries.
* and ** These tuition fees apply to students enrolled on a full-time basis. Students studying on the standard part-time course structure over two years are charged 50% of the full-time applicable fee for each study year.
All postgraduate fees are subject to inflationary increases. This means that the overall cost of studying the course via part-time mode is slightly higher than studying it full-time in one year. Royal Holloway's policy is that any increases in fees will not exceed 5% for continuing students. For further information, please see our terms and conditions. Please note that for research courses, we adopt the minimum fee level recommended by the UK Research Councils for the Home tuition fee. Each year, the fee level is adjusted in line with inflation (currently, the measure used is the Treasury GDP deflator). Fees displayed here are therefore subject to change and are usually confirmed in the spring of the year of entry. For more information on the Research Council Indicative Fee please see the RCUK website.
** The UK Government has confirmed that EU nationals are no longer eligible to pay the same fees as UK students, nor be eligible for funding from the Student Loans Company. This means you will be classified as an international student. At Royal Holloway, we wish to support those students affected by this change in status through this transition. For eligible EU students starting their course with us in September 2022, we will award a fee reduction scholarship equivalent to 60% of the difference between the UK and international fee for your course. This will apply for the duration of your course. Find out more
