Clinical Associate Psychologist (Children and Young People)

CAPs are employed by an NHS Trust and are taught two days a week at Royal Holloway.  The other three days they conduct practical, clinical work in the employing Trust under the supervision of clinical psychologists.  London NHS Trusts will select students and commission programme places.

CAPs are typically trained to work with one population and the Royal Holloway programme will focus on working with Children and Young People. The curriculum includes 6 modules to develop a range of clinical, academic and research skills and requires students to develop critical and reflective skills to support their clinical practice. Lectures, reflective seminars and skills based workshops will be used to support and engage all student learning styles across a range of abilities.

Students will be expected to undertake some additional study outside of teaching and placement but this will be a to a lesser extent as teaching and placement time is extensive.  Study days will be built into the timetable and will mainly be during placement time outside of term.

All students will have a Personal Tutor as well as a placement supervisor.

Assessments focus on developing a clinical portfolio in line with the apprenticeship assessment model. This will include observational ratings of practice, practice placement evaluation forms, clinical case reports, clinical case oral presentations, and an NHS based research project with literature review. Programme Tutors and supervisors will individually track student progress and conduct evaluations to ensure student fulfil the requirements of the CAPs programme as detailed by the British Psychological Society.

Psychology or a related Social Science subject with evidence of having taken and passed methodological and statistics training at degree level.

All postgraduate fees are subject to inflationary increases. This means that the overall cost of studying the course via part-time mode is slightly higher than studying it full-time in one year. This means you will be classified as an international student. At Royal Holloway, we wish to support those students affected by this change in status through this transition. For eligible EU students starting their course with us in September 2022, we will award a fee reduction scholarship equivalent to 60% of the difference between the UK and international fee for your course.
