Entry requirements for postgraduate degree courses

For all postgraduate degrees, you should meet Royal Holloway's general entrance requirements as well as any stated by the department to which you've applied. All qualifications required will be confirmed before enrolment.

Guide to entry requirements

The below is intended as a guide only. You can find out more information about entry requirements on our course finder or department pages.

Postgraduate diploma

The entry requirements for a diploma depend on the programme; you should refer to the individual course details for specific requirements.

Masters degrees

For a masters degree (MA, MMus, MBA, MSc) the minimum requirement is the equivalent of a UK Second Class Honours degree, usually in a subject appropriate to the programme you wish to study. For some, it's essential that you have an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) degree and for others - for example the MBA in International Management - you may need to have relevant work experience and passed a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).

Other requirements

Subject knowledge

It’s not always necessary to have studied your chosen subject area in your first degree as some courses act as conversion programmes and aim to give you an intensive introduction in the subject in one year.

However, others require very specific subject knowledge and for you to have taken a degree in a particular area at undergraduate level.

Check department websites for specific requirements.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you’ll be required to demonstrate your English language level through a recognised qualification.

If your English language results are slightly below the required level for your course you can attend a pre-sessional English language course, meaning you won’t have to retake any exams.

If you studied your undergraduate degree in an English speaking country, or studied a course in the medium of English, you may not be required to take an IELTS or equivalent test.

Please contact Admissions with details of your undergraduate degree for confirmation.

International students

Royal Holloway welcomes applications from international students whose qualifications are equivalent to the entry requirements for our postgraduate courses.

See Royal Holloway International's Your Country pages for more information.
