Global Leadership Programme

Global Leadership Programme

The Global Leadership Programme (GLP) is an exciting extra-curricular programme which aims to develop students’ skills for working successfully with cultural difference through the tools of experiential learning and reflection. Key themes to be explored as part of the GLP include issues surrounding citizenship and leadership in a global context as well as inter-cultural competence. The programme spans a range of activities and includes workshops and a residential trip to increase participants’ global awareness as well as their ability to operate effectively in cross‐cultural settings.

Applications will be open to current students across all departments who are due to enter their final year of undergraduate study. The programme equips participants with key skills as they prepare for the global employment market on graduation. To this end, recruitment to the programme is designed to give shortlisted candidates an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of a real-life selection process. This entails tasks typically used in assessment centres such as psychometric testing, role-plays and other simulation activities.

What attributes are we looking for?

  • A professional attitude, including ability to meet deadlines
  • An interest in social, ethical and political issues across the world
  • An open mind and willingness to immerse in new experiences
  • Reflective skills
  • An interest in developing problem solving skills
  • An interest in working collaboratively

Application

If you think you have the right skills to take part, the first step is to complete an application form, which will be made available on this page in early 2018.

Applications are welcomed from home and international students, from any academic department, and you don’t need your department’s permission to apply. You do however need to be a student who will be entering their final year of undergraduate study in 2018/19.

Assessment

After a detailed review of the application forms, a shortlist will be made.

The assessment centre will give you experience of a real-life selection process, providing skills that can be taken on into the job market after graduation. The assessment centre may include activities such as group exercises, presentations, interviews and psychometric testing.

From the results of the assessment centre, successful applicants will be offered places on the programme.

Residential Trip

The details of this year’s residential trip are still being finalised – so keep your eyes and ears open for an announcement soon!

All travel & accommodation (including breakfast) costs will be covered by the programme. You will however be required to pay a £100 deposit if you’re accepted onto the programme to ensure commitment, which will be returned to you on arrival in the destination of the residential trip. You’ll also need spending money to pay for any additional costs such as subsistence and travel to on-campus workshops.

Exhibition Event & Completion

On return from the residential trip, there will be a series of workshops designed to encourage team work in the lead up to the exhibition event. You’ll be divided into small groups to create informative and reflective exhibits for display at the event.

Prior to the exhibition event you’ll also be required to write a personal “Reflection” – a piece detailing your own thoughts on the experience of the programme and what you’ve learnt. This piece won’t be pass/fail – although submission of a Reflection is required in order to complete the programme.

At the event itself, your group will present their exhibit to a host of guests from across the university, and the culmination of the evening will be the presentation of a Certificate of Completion to each student involved. Subsequently, you will also be awarded passport points – a formal recognition of your effort and dedication to gaining employability skills that can be stated on your CV.

Please remember: The GLP is extracurricular and as such will not count towards your degree.
